Tutorial Four and Five: Video Production Sessions

Task Four (Blog Posting): Provide a brief summary of the services offered by U Tube. Information can be drawn from the week five tutorial hand out.
You tube is a website which the whole world can access. For starters all you need to do is sign up which is easy all you need is an email address to confirm you tube when you are done putting your details in. You can post a range of videos on you tube may be what your interested in or something you want people to see. It can then get ratings put on it to show how good the video is. There are so many videos that people can watch that are already loaded onto you tube.

Task Five (Blog Posting): Provide a brief account (1-2 paragraphs) on how the use of planning (storyboarding and scripting aided your groups short film.
Scripting is good in the way that you can organise what is going to happen. We first talked about what we wanted to say in each scene and then got our class mate to show and talk about what we had discussed on camera.

Storyboarding was good because we had a task which as a group focused on. This was disabled toilets in the polytechnic area. We quickly talked as a group as to what ones we would go to and put on our video. We then wrote it down so that we knew where to go to next.

Tutorial Three: Blog Creation Tasks

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Blogger

Blogger provides people who visit with all kinds of knowledge and it lets people talk about their interests or even make a diary of their life. It is good for people who post things on their blog to get out what they think about something and it is also good for people looking on blogs to comment on the postings. You can also add photos of things to do with your interest or what your topic is that you have posted on blogger. You can also add a video as well if wished. You can change the colour of fonts or how you set up your blogger as well.

Tutorial Eight: Assistive technology

Provide a definition of Assistive technology (your Cook and Hussey reading may be helpful with this).
Assistive technology is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices and the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. AT promotes greater independence for people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks.

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions.
Gooshy step talking sequencer #673 $117.95.
Size 10 ¼” x 71/4” x 3”. Requires 4 AA batteries.
Our step talking sequencers are perfect for the non-specking adult or child. It allows the user to express a sequential series of your pre-recorded messages (300 second total). The sequencer allows people with even the most limited communication skills to carry on a simple conversation. Ideal for a number of different purposes including sequencing, testing, directions, multiplication, memorization, medical instructions, storytelling and sing-a long’s.
Now available in five different models.
Size: 11” x 4 ½” x 2”. Requires 4 AA batteries

How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity for the user? Provide examples here from the tutorial and lecture.
If a child is having problems with communicating and trying to express themselves this piece of equipment is useful to do this. It has a fun look about it and it makes you want to touch it because of the soft gel pad that it has. We used it to make pancakes in class one day to make the beater work to mix the mixture. This shows that the child would be able to interact with people more and other people knowing what the child is needing or wants.

Tutorial Six:The internet and online communities

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating
The community that I have decided to look into is the website called disabled online The address for this is:
http://www.disabledonline.com/

What is the brief or focus of this community
This site has been done to provide the best content for people. It is also there for family and friends to interact and gain whatever information necessary to a better one's life. Disabled On line’s primary purpose is to offer barrier free opportunities for individuals who face physical and mental obstacles on a daily basis.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?
This site also provides a variety of interactive tools. Access to our chat rooms and forums are available at any time of the day and all year around.
They also have links that you can click on which give you information on the particular area you have clicked on. These are all on the home page of diabledonline.com. These are some of the types of links that are on the page that users can click on: Home & living, Education, Medical, Social and recreation.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?
I think the main and biggest reason why people contribute to this community is so they are able to interact with other people who are in a similar situation and this may give the user a gain in information that they had never through of which may help them in their daily living. It is also good for the individual to come on this site as it would make them feel that they do exist and that there is help out there if needed.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed (you may have to provide a context to your excerpt).

As a disabled person of more than 30 years, I have written many articles on many subjects. If this one assists just one person, I have achieved my goal. Guide Dogs & Their Owners A guide dog is a highly trained dog that acts as a mobility aid to blind and visually impaired people. It provides not only mobility but gives freedom and independence as well as being a faithful and loving companion. With the increased mobility and independence gained through the use of a guide dog, the confidence of the blind or visually impaired person soars. Well trained guide dogs are intelligent, alert, and always willing to serve. Amongst other things a guide dog is taught to: • Walk in a straight line in the centre of the pavement unless there is an obstacle. • Not to turn corners unless told to do so. • To stop at kerbs and wait for the command to cross the road, or to turn left or right; • Amazingly they are taught to judge height and width so that its owner does not bump their head or shoulder • How to deal with traffic. Matching the correct dog with the correct owner takes skill and experience. The owner’s length of stride, height and lifestyle all contribute to the type of guide dog they will be matched with. Dog and owner will spend up to four weeks of intensive training together until they qualify together. The visually-impaired owner often pays only a token 50p for their dog. The guide dog is then awarded a white or yellow harness.
Some Do’s & Don’ts When Meeting A guide Dog • Don't give the dog commands. Only it’s master can do so. • Don't walk on the dog's left side as it may become distracted or confused. • Do walk on the owner's right side but several paces behind him. • Don't attempt to grab or steer the person while the dog is guiding him or her attempt to hold the dog's harness. • Do ask if the owner needs your assistance and, if so, offer your left arm. • Don't give the dog table scraps. Do respect the master's need to give the dog a balanced diet and to maintain its good habits. • Don't allow children to tease or abuse the dog. • Do allow it to rest undisturbed. • Don't allow your pets to challenge or intimidate a guide dog.. • If permission is granted, Don't pat the dog on the head. Do stroke the dog on the shoulder area.

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.
At Disabled Online, they will not collect any personally identifiable information about the individuals (name, address, telephone number, email address) unless they provide it to the community voluntarily. If they do not want their personal information collected, they ask to not submit it.
Disabled online is a public website that anyone can access. It is good that they have a username and a password that people use who access this site as it is safe in some cases. On this site they do have a list of consumer’s privacy rights and site policies.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity
The good thing about this online community is that it holds so much information not just on the site but the people who are interacting on the site as well for others to read and gather information that in the future may be beneficial for the individual. It is something that someone can access everyday if needed.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.
I think that it would be good that people could meet up who gain a relationship with online.
Anyone who talks on the chartroom anyone else can see the conversations that you have on it.
I think that more information on the site may be beneficial to the people who use it.

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?
Positives:
You can take a picture and delete it straight away if you don’t like it
Some tend to be a lot more clearer images depending on the mega pixels and the type of camera and how much the image is zoomed in
You can download them onto the computer if you have a full memory and then delete all the photos so you have room again on your camera
They are cheaper to get developed depending on what size you are getting
You can more control over what you want the colour of your photo to turn out like

Negatives:
Overall traditional film based cameras have a clearer image for example: If you were to blow up an image to a big size the quality of the image would still be there are just as clear.
When buying yourself a digital camera you may need to pay a lot to get a good camera. But is you went out and got yourself a film based camera it wouldn’t matter how much you had to pay for it whether it was cheap or dear you would still get good quality images.
Film cameras also allow for a Varity of filters and lenses, giving the photographer a much fuller spectrum in which to work with.

Retrieved May 29, 2008 from, http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-some-benefits-of-using-film-cameras.htm

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.
Digital images are good in how you can do so many things with them. For example You can put all of your photos onto the computer and make a slide show. From there you can put them onto a memory stick. Digital images can also be taken on cell phones and sent to other cell phones. You can also download photos onto a disk and then play it into a DVD player so that you can watch them on T.V.

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.
Ethical issues are one of the things that come about quite a lot on the internet as it is something that anyone in the world can access. Things such as taking pictures of people who haven’t given their informed consent. These would then get put onto the internet. It is so hard to stop this from happening as the internet is such a huge network and there are just too many ways that images can be changed or displayed on the internet.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice.
Digital images would be used in occupational therapy practice quite a bit if you were working with housing modifications or wheelchairs. These would be taken a picture of so that the occupational therapist could work out a plan or send away for a quote that would best suit that particular individual. Digital images may come in handy for taking pictures of equipment that already exists. Digital zoom has end result of being poor the clearness and quality of the image.

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com
Flicker is a good site to all sorts of things with your photos. For example on Flicker you can shear photos with friend’s family or anyone who may live around the world. Another good thing that you can do with your photos once you have got them on there is you can edit them and change if wished. You can change the colour and size of them.

Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com
There is another photo storage like Flicker that does the same type of thing this is Shutterfly. It is a website that has unlimited picture storage and it has instant online photo shearing.

Explain what the difference is between a digital and an optical zoom
Most cameras that we have these days have got both digital zoom and optical zoom.
Firstly the optical zoom is like a lens on a film camera. When it zooms in the focal length and magnification takes place. When this happens the quality of what is zoomed in keeps it’s high quality throughout the zoom range. Then there is digital zoom. This crops the image to a smaller size it then enlarges the cropped portion till fill the frame again.

Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel
Mega pixels are the amount of individual pixels that go into making a image.
These days the number of pixels can range from 1 million which is referred as 1 mega pixel to 14 million which is referred as 14 mega pixels. Depending on how many pixels a digital camera has on it would all depend on how excellent prints come out depending on what size you have chosen to get them developed on. For example: a 3 mega pixel camera can make excellent 4”x6” prints.
